ACE Nursing Model of Care: Achieving Collaborative Excellence
Geisinger is piloting a new model of care on our Advanced Acute Care Units at the Danville campus. The ACE Nursing Model of Care will utilize more Patient Care Technicians to handle duties that do not require a nursing license, allowing licensed nurses to focus on advanced skills aligned with their training. This model offers Patient Care Technicians opportunities for career growth, increased autonomy, and greater involvement in patient care.
Primary duties include:
- Facilitating activities of daily living: hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals
- Monitoring vital signs
- Performing Point of Care testing
- Turning and repositioning patients
- Recording daily weights
- Checking and exchanging equipment
Additional training provided on advanced patient care skills including:
- Advanced dressing care
- Suctioning
- Removing Foley Catheters
- Peripheral IV placement
- Venipunctures and skin punctures for blood samples

Job Description:
Responsible for clerical duties and direct patient care activities, depending on unit needs, to support quality care. Must meet qualifications to care for patients in the assigned age range.
- Provide patient care within the nursing assistant scope, following care plans.
- Observe, document, and report patient needs and condition changes.
- Collect and maintain specimen integrity as per policy and physician orders.
- Assist with activities of daily living and ongoing care responsibilities, including hygiene and linen changes.
- Provide one-on-one patient safety monitoring as assigned.
- Transport specimens and perform point of care testing, including instrument maintenance and quality control.
- Assist in troubleshooting equipment and supplies.
- Serve as a preceptor for new staff and students.
- Handle clerical tasks related to admissions, transfers, discharges, and orders, facilitating patient throughput.
- Coordinate transportation for tests and communicate electronically for test scheduling and results.
- Order supplies and communicate with food services regarding diets.
- Operate and maintain clerical equipment, scheduling repairs as needed.
- Transport medications and blood products as necessary, following safety protocols.
Work is performed in a clinical environment, adhering to all policies and procedures. This profile covers typical responsibilities necessary for successful performance.
Unit: Medical Surgical Unit
Schedule: Evening shifts 3pm-11pm and 11am-11pm, including every other weekend and holidays.
No experience required. Comprehensive on-the-job training provided.
