General Summary

The Patient Care Technician assists in the delivery of patient care under the direct clinical supervision of the Registered Nurse. Direct care activities are delegated by the Registered Nurse and are consistent with the Maryland Board of Nursing-Nurse Practice Act. These activities include caring for patients’ needs, nutrition, providing direct observation, transporting patients, and documenting these activities.

Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed community teaching hospital focusing on managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Maryland Nursing Assistant Certification is required, along with completion of one of the following training programs: hospital-based program, community college, Emergency Medical Technician, or Medical Corpsmen.
  • Individuals with relevant work experience that provides on-the-job training equivalent to the above programs may be considered as a substitute for formal PCT training.
  • Minimum of one year of recent, direct patient care experience is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to utilize universal safety precautions and act appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the patient population(s) served, including understanding growth and development over the lifespan and assessing data relevant to the patient’s age-specific needs.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members, fostering optimal patient care.
