Requirements: At least one year of previous patient care technician experience.
Title and salary are determined based on education and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Provide patient care, assist with procedures and daily activities, including physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
- Report changes in patient status to RN; perform core nursing assistant tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, weighing, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care.
- Perform additional tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV catheter removal.
- Report equipment malfunctions, communicate with other departments, establish professional relationships.
- Contribute to unit activities: responding to call lights, phones, passing meal trays, transporting patients.
- Receive feedback, identify learning needs, and improve skills.
- Provide patient and family instruction under RN supervision, manage patient restraints, communicate effectively with healthcare team, understand cultural diversity and safety standards.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and safety standards; support department initiatives.
- Document in medical records and perform clerical functions.
- Maintain competency in advanced skills such as phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Either:
- One year of healthcare experience, or
- Six months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days, or
- Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training with clinical rotation, or
- Bachelor's degree in health sciences.
Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class and basic information system training.Preferred: Microcomputer experience, effective communication skills, EMT or Paramedic certification or current enrollment in such programs.Limited medication access to distribution to nurses.Certifications and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR per AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
- ACLS preferred.
