UPMC Hamot is looking for a casual Patient Care Technician to join the MICU!

Previous patient care experience highly preferred.

Title and Salary are determined based upon education and experience.

Purpose: The Patient Care Technician delivers routine patient care and supports departmental services under the direction of nurses or physicians, ensuring high-quality care. Responsibilities include assisting with daily living activities, vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry setup, and prevention protocols. Additional tasks may involve specimen collection, dressing changes, restraint management, and equipment use. Technicians must also demonstrate competency in at least one advanced skill such as phlebotomy, EKGs, or catheter and NG tube removal, based on departmental needs.


Responsibilities:

  • Supports departmental improvements, quality initiatives, and efficient operations.
  • Performs core nursing assistant duties including ADLs, vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry setup, and safety protocols.
  • Handles equipment issues, communicates effectively across departments, and assists with unit tasks like call lights, phones, and patient transport.
  • Actively seeks feedback, identifies learning needs, and works to improve skills and performance.
  • Communicates clearly, respects diversity, and fosters a safe, collaborative work environment.
  • Assists with patient care procedures, therapies, and provides updates to RNs.
  • Educates patients and families under RN direction and manages restraints per protocol.
  • Adheres to all care and safety policies, documents accurately, and completes clerical duties as needed.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • In addition to the standard required competencies, the Patient Care Technician will achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12 lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.
