Job description

Main 5 consists of 27 private rooms. The types of patients seen on Main 5 include: patients who have received surgical treatment or interventions, those undergoing surgical procedures, post-ICU or step-down transfer surgical patients, trauma, falls, joints, motorcycle, sports injuries, back surgeries, hip, knee.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Supports the patient care team by performing direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Assists with tasks such as specimen collection and limited tests as per physician orders, following established procedures and training.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Supports other caregivers as needed under RN supervision.
  • Performs activities of daily living including:
  • Ambulation, meal intake, emptying Foley catheters, transfers, passing water, maintaining safety, recording heights and weights, feeding, responding to call lights, bathing/showering, recording I&Os and charting in Cerner, taking vital signs, applying foam dressings, making beds, and housekeeping duties.
  • Transports patients throughout the hospital, assists with transfers and discharges, and manages equipment removal post-discharge.
  • Assists with menu completion, delivers nourishment, maintains patient refrigerators, and updates logs.
  • Performs specimen collection, blood glucose testing, and arranges lab transport.
  • Performs EKGs, removes Foley catheters, conducts bladder scans, and applies external devices as ordered.
  • Places patients on telemetry monitors if applicable.
  • Supports safety initiatives like hourly rounding, fall risk monitoring, and providing bedside companionship as needed.
  • Maintains composure in high-pressure situations, demonstrates understanding, trust, and compassion, and commits to excellent customer service and respectful teamwork.
  • Documents all care in Cerner.
  • Must demonstrate Monitor Transport Technician competency within 4-6 months and annually thereafter, with three demonstrations in the first year.
  • Completes mandatory education, maintains BLS certification, and any applicable licensure.

BACKGROUND, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION

  • High school diploma required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training through AHA Healthcare Provider is required.
  • Adherence to attendance policies and punctuality is expected.
  • Basic computer skills are necessary.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Working hours vary based on department needs.
  • Supervised directly by an RN.
  • Lunch periods assigned by Charge RN.
  • Requires full body motion, handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and coordination.
  • Extended standing and walking are required.
  • Corrected vision and hearing are necessary.
  • Potential exposure to infectious and hazardous materials, body fluids, and other risks typical in a clinical setting.
  • Work includes weekend, holiday rotations, and varied shifts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS ADDENDUM

Purpose: To evaluate essential physical job requirements, performed as specified.

Physical activity levels:

O = Occasionally, F = Frequently, C = Constantly, N = Not essential.

Standing and walking are constant; climbing is not required; twisting and reaching are occasional.

Performs patient care duties as needed.
