Job Description

General Summary

Under the direction of professional nursing staff, provides direct patient care, including taking vital signs, checking surgical dressings, and assisting patients with activities of daily living. Performs blood draws and collects specimen samples. Observes and collects data, communicates patient status to identify needs, and provides necessary care. Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following describes the general nature and level of work for this role and is not an exhaustive list of all duties:

  1. Performs testing and manages patient care based on results and clinical findings.
  2. Records patient activities, including ADLs such as feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, and transferring.
  3. Documents vital signs and patient reports, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, and pain levels.
  4. Assists with patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  5. Participates in cost-effective strategies to optimize outcomes.
  6. Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention, and ensures a safe clinical environment.
  7. Maintains order and cleanliness of patient rooms and work areas; manages supplies and linens.
  8. Provides post-mortem care as needed.
  9. Collaborates with healthcare team members to implement and communicate the care plan, reporting any changes in patient condition.
  10. Ensures patient comfort and manages pain effectively.
  11. Measures and documents urinary and stool output, calorie counts, and patient weight.
  12. Assists with urinary catheter care, including insertion, maintenance, and removal, and documents volumes.
  13. Performs blood glucose monitoring and venipuncture for blood samples and IV access.
  14. Conducts nasal swabs and prepares equipment for IV placement.
  15. Operates EKG machines, attaches/removes leads, and records rhythm strips.
  16. Assists with enteral feedings and performs respiratory care procedures as delegated.
  17. Assists with wound care, dressing changes, and skin integrity assessments.
  18. Collects laboratory specimens following proper identification and documentation procedures.
  19. Provides orthopedic and rehab device care, including braces, splints, and compression stockings.
  20. Precepts and mentors other PCTs, ensuring proper documentation.
  21. Participates in hourly patient rounds and responds to alarms and call lights.
  22. Follows safety protocols and reports adverse events or near misses.
  23. Practices safe lifting and body mechanics.
  24. Supports patient flow and minimizes care delays.
  25. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Current Maryland CNA or GNA certification required.
  3. Minimum of two years of ED or ICU experience required.
  4. Current BLS certification required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Ability to work collaboratively within a healthcare team.
  3. Organizational skills to prioritize tasks and perform under stress.
  4. Computer literacy.
  5. Proficiency in blood glucose testing and documentation.
  6. Ability to perform delegated nursing tasks respecting patient diversity and needs.
  7. Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control.
