Job summary

UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center, part of the University of Maryland Medical System, seeks a weekend-focused Patient Care Technician to join a busy psychiatric/medical unit. You will function under licensed supervision, assisting with patient care and contributing to a therapeutic, rehabilitative milieu.

The role requires a CNA certification (MBON) and AHA CPR, with at least one year of PCT experience or equivalent nursing education. Expect rotating shifts including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • CNA certification from MBON is required.
  • AHA CPR certification required.
  • One year of experience as a PCT or two nursing education semesters.
  • Experience in direct patient care in a psychiatric facility preferred.
  • Experience managing potentially violent patients (CPI/NCI/MOAB) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, perform delegated medical and mental health care to patients.
  • Be a multi-disciplinary team member of the nursing staff to maintain a therapeutic milieu.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and assist in crisis management as needed.

Job Requirements

We are looking for someone who prefers to work weekends. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; some dayshift (8am to 8:30pm) and some nightshift (8pm to 8:30am). Three shifts a week (36 hours) / 72 hours per pay period.

General Summary

Under direct supervision of a licensed professional staff performs delegated medical and mental health care practices to patients with diverse psychiatric/medical and substance abuse disorders. The mental health associate participates as a multi-disciplinary team member of the nursing staff to maintain a therapeutic and rehabilitative milieu environment.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Charge Nurse.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Current CNA certification from MBON.
  • AHA CPR certification
  • One Year of experience in a PCT or similar position, or two (2) semesters of clinical experience in formal Nursing Education.
  • Experience working with direct patient care in a psychiatric facility preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in managing potentially violent/aggressive patients, CPI/NCI/MOAB preferred
Working Conditions
  • Works inside, in a clean well‑lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, such as chemicals and cleaning agents, requiring the observation of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices. Can expect to be physically and verbally abused by patients. Works a regular assigned shift but may be expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as necessary. May be expected to work on other than regular unit of hire to provide adequate staffing, if the need arises. Participates in temporary assignment measures. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires bending/stooping/crouching/kneeling approximately 50% of the time in the delivery of patient evaluation and treatment. Requires reaching/grasping/handling of small equipment and paperwork weighing up to 20 lb. Approximately 70% of the time in the delivery of patient care and performance of clerical duties. Requires standing and walking approximately 80% of the time; with occasional stair climbing. Requires lifting and safe positioning patients, weighing in excess of 100 lbs., with the assistance of others or ergonomic equipment and utilizing proper body mechanics approximately 50% of the time, in accordance with Safe Patient Lifting policy. Requires pushing/pulling equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. Approximately 20% of the time, requires carrying supplies/equipment weighing up to 20 lbs. approximately 50% of the time. Requires substantial movements/motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers as in performing treatment procedures approximately 50% of the time. Requires good visual acuity to read patient records and equipment monitors; requires adequate ability to receive detailed information conveyed through oral communication in the process of evaluating and treating patients accurately, clearly, quickly approximately 80% of the time.
