Rapid Transfer Unit

The Rapid Transfer Unit (RTU) is a specialized area of variable acuity designed to quickly evaluate and triage patients with acute medical conditions. The primary goal of the RTU is to expedite patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment decisions, leading to more efficient patient flow and improved outcomes. Nurses are required to have ACLS and NIHSS certifications before completing orientation. Nurses will be cross-trained to work on Med/Obs/Tele units.

RTU employs a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive, yet expedited, assessments of patients presenting with acute or sub-acute conditions. The unit utilizes standardized protocols and point-of-care testing to facilitate rapid diagnosis and triage, ensuring patients receive appropriate care promptly.

RTU is a vital component of the healthcare system, focusing on rapid patient evaluation to improve outcomes. By quickly assessing patients and initiating timely treatment, the team aims to reduce complications, shorten hospital stays, and enhance overall patient well-being.

RTU provides a streamlined process for evaluating patients with a wide spectrum of medical conditions. The focus is on prompt assessment and efficient decision-making to determine the appropriate course of treatment and level of care.

RTU is a dedicated healthcare space designed for rapid evaluation of patients presenting with various medical concerns. The goal is to reduce wait times and improve patient flow throughout the facility.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This role involves providing direct patient care and assisting with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent performs basic nursing procedures related to patient care and comfort for stable patients and assists RNs with acutely ill patients. Responsibilities include practicing medical asepsis, respecting patient dignity and privacy, maintaining objectivity, adhering to hospital policies, responding appropriately in emergencies, maintaining the patient environment, and documenting care accurately. The incumbent works under supervision—general supervision for stable patients and direct supervision for acutely ill or complex patients. Tasks include managing patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Providing and documenting direct patient care activities such as vital signs, skin surveys, ambulation, specimen collection, intake/output, meal assistance, height/weight, blood glucose testing, point-of-care testing, bladder scans, transporting patients, and assisting with exams and procedures. (30%)
  • Participating in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives like bedside shift reports, hourly rounding, falls prevention, hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
  • Accurately documenting vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimens, and treatments; reporting changes or concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
  • Participating in unit activities such as supply stocking and equipment cleaning. (20%)
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Limited or no experience; must attend 2 weeks of training
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • Basic math skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Clearance

Preferred:

  • Recent acute care experience within last 3 years
  • Enrollment in ASN or BSN program, preferably with at least one clinical rotation completed

*Casual Working Hours:

Weekly hours are 4 hours – Rotational. Candidates must be flexible to work days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

This is a permanent, year-round position.
