GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent in this position is expected to perform basic nursing procedures related to care and comfort of patients in stable condition, and have knowledge of patient population needs in the assigned work area. In addition, the incumbent is expected to assist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients. They are expected to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy of every patient and family, and maintain objectivity during patient care. They are expected to know and adhere to all basic hospital policies and procedures, and respond appropriately during emergency situations. They are also expected to maintain the patient/family environment and perform general unit upkeep. The incumbent uses accurate verbal and written communication, and documents patient care appropriately in the electronic medical record. They work under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, with specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse and/or Care Team Leader, demonstrating efficient time management by completing work within scheduled times. Additionally, they perform duties related to patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide, obtain, or perform and document direct patient care activities such as activities of daily living, skin survey, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and their medical records, documenting oxygen use, early mobilization and ambulation protocols, and assisting with exams, treatments, and procedures. (30%)
  2. Participate in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, including bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding to promote safety (falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols), and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
  3. Accurately document vital signs, weights, intake and output, restraints, specimen collection, and treatments. Report changes in patient's physical, mental, and emotional conditions, as well as concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
  4. Participate in unit activities such as supply stocking and cleaning or checking equipment and appliances. (20%)
  5. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Limited or no experience: must attend 2 weeks of training
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Perform basic mathematics
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR – American Heart Association
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate

Preferred:

  • Acute care experience within the last 3 years
  • Currently enrolled in ASN or BSN program, with preference for those who have completed at least one clinical rotation
