GENERAL OVERVIEW:

This job provides direct care to patients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coordination. The incumbent is expected to perform basic nursing procedures related to patient care and comfort for stable patients, with knowledge of patient population needs in the assigned area. They assist the RN in caring for acutely ill patients, practice medical asepsis, respect patient dignity and privacy, and maintain objectivity during patient care. They adhere to hospital policies and procedures, respond appropriately during emergencies, maintain the patient/family environment, and document care accurately in the electronic medical record. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, receiving specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse or Care Team Leader, and demonstrates efficient time management, completing work within scheduled times. Additionally, they coordinate activities like patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide, obtain, or perform and document direct patient care activities such as activities of daily living, skin survey, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point of care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and records, documenting oxygen therapy, early mobilization, assisting with exams, treatments, and procedures. (30%)
  2. Participate in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, including bedside shift reports, hourly rounding for safety, fall prevention, hand hygiene, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean environment. (30%)
  3. Accurately document vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, and treatments. Report any changes in patient’s physical, mental, or emotional condition, and communicate issues or concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
  4. Participate in unit activities such as supply stocking, equipment and appliance cleaning, checks, and retrieval. (20%)
  5. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Limited or no experience: able to attend 2 weeks of training
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Perform basic mathematics
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance

Preferred:

  • Recent acute care experience within last 3 years
  • Currently enrolled in ASN or BSN program, with preference for those who have completed at least one clinical rotation
