As a Patient Care Technician with UPMC, you'll have a meaningful impact in patient care. We offer a training course for qualified entry-level candidates to learn and demonstrate the necessary skills.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate awareness of behavior's impact on department functioning.
- Comply with safety policies, procedures, and blood borne pathogen protocols.
- Report equipment malfunctions.
- Establish effective communication strategies.
- Respond appropriately to emergent situations within the nursing assistant scope.
- Seek opportunities to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
- Report patient care updates and changes in patient status to the RN.
- Adhere to policies regarding patient care and hospital information.
- Take responsibility for assignments and view problems as challenges.
- Communicate learning needs to the unit director.
- Maintain professional relationships and a safe environment.
- Support patient safety and recovery through safety checks, cleanliness, and equipment management.
- Assist in planning and prioritizing activities, participate in self-review.
- Contribute to unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing trays, and transporting patients.
- Provide direct patient care, including activities of daily living.
- Manage supplies and equipment to facilitate care.
- Perform routine tests like blood glucose, vital signs, and I&Os.
- Accept feedback and provide companionship/supervision as needed.
- Deliver nourishments, fill water pitchers, and distribute mail.
- Apply, monitor, and remove restraints as per protocols, and provide diversion activities.
- Document in medical records following procedures.
Experience Required:
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of UPMC patient care technician class or first year of a nursing program if no prior hospital or pre-hospital training.
- Basic information system training.
- Microcomputer experience preferred.
- Effective communication skills.
- EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment preferred.
- Limited medication access, only for distribution to nurses.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR.
- Act 34 clearance.
