Job description

Responsibilities:
  1. Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  2. Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care) AND at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
  3. Ensures equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department. Establishes effective communication with other departments. Maintains professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. Contributes to universal unit activities such as responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  4. Constructively receives feedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director. Takes action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Participates in self-review as requested.
  5. Provides instruction to patients and their families under the RN's guidance. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  6. Demonstrates effective communication with all healthcare team members. Shows understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment issues in health professions. Supports safety in the workplace and develops productive relationships internally and externally, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment.
  7. Adheres strictly to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information. Complies with safety policies including standard precautions.
  8. Supports departmental changes and initiatives. Takes responsibility for assignments, views problems as challenges, and contributes to department projects and quality initiatives.
  9. Documents appropriately in the medical record. Performs work efficiently and completes clerical functions as needed.
  10. Achieves and maintains competency in standard responsibilities, including ADLs, point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry application, and restraint management. Performs additional advanced skills such as phlebotomy, IV removal, and EKG as needed based on department requirements.
