Position Summary

Under the supervision of an RN, the candidate assists in the delivery of age‑specific patient care, helps patients with activities of daily living, and provides basic nursing care. Maintains a safe and clean environment, promotes nursing team efficiency, and supports system strategic plans.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent (or GED).
• Certified Nursing Assistant license required with successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant training program.
• Certified to practice as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of Maryland.
• Minimum one year of patient care experience.
• Previous emergency department experience or the equivalent (ICU, EMT or paramedic experience) preferred.
• Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS‑HCP) certification.
• Must have and maintain all applicable certifications per departmental requirements within six months of hire.
• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑specific care, understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan.

Essential Functions

• Receives report on patients and completes patient care assignments within the time frame designated by the RN.
• Observing, reporting, and recording patient behaviors and interactive dynamics.
• Obtaining vital signs.
• Assisting with delivery of physical care and hygiene as needed.
• Interacting therapeutically with patients.
• Actively participating in the therapeutic milieu.
• Observes patient condition and communicates observations to the RN or team leader.
• Orders, stocks, and maintains equipment and supplies in specific departments.
• Utilizes cost control measures, i.e.: conservative use of supplies and accurate charging systems.
• Clerical duties as assigned by unit management.
• Answers telephones, intercoms, taking and conveying messages appropriately. Places calls as directed.
• Performs or prepares procedures; obtains supplies and equipment.
• Assists in orienting and precepting staff as directed.
• Functions cooperatively as a team member. Responds as directed by responsible RN to changing patients'/unit's needs. During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or transport patients.
• Offers support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
• Accurately and legibly records data collected and notifies RN of any untoward events, i.e.: behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.
• Makes patient rounds, providing for patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction. Maintains patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.
• Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
• Serves as coach and mentor for less experienced colleagues.
• Offers consistent and visible support to team members.
• Complies with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.
• Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients, families, significant others, and other health care members.

• Responds to Shore Regional Health emergency codes as appropriate.

• Ensures accuracy in the medication process, including transport, storage, and security of medications to include IV solutions.
• Performs related duties as assigned. Certification in Basic Life Support.
