Description

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team, under the direction of the Registered Nurse, perform basic nursing care activities, assist in maintaining a safe, clean, stocked patient care setting, assist staff members, and help direct patient flow.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Certifications
C.N.A, PCT, or EMT Certification (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year experience in a healthcare setting if possible, pediatrics; one semester clinical experience at an accredited nursing school or military corpsman training (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Basic computer skills, knowledge of aseptic technique, basic calculations, human relations and interpersonal skills

Required Licenses and Certifications
Patient Care Technician (CPCT), Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS)

Functional Accountabilities
Patient Services - Admission
  • Orient family to call lights, monitor, and unit
  • Set up monitor and alarms
  • Perform vital signs, height, weight, and head circumference
Patient Services - Daily Living
  • Assist with ADLs including bathing, skin care, mouth care, peri-care
  • Ensure proper nutrition as ordered
  • Care for tube feeding and feeding of patients
  • Apply skin creams as directed
  • Collect cultures, urine, stool samples
Direct Patient Care
  • Recognize and report pain and skin breakdown
  • Prioritize tasks and requests from RN
  • Assist with trach care, EVDs, central line dressing, pin care, cast care, and care for dying patients
  • Prepare rooms for discharge and admission, maintain environment
  • Obtain equipment and supplies
Monitor Surveillance
  • Observe and alert RN for monitor deviations
  • Follow monitor guidelines and dress code
Infection Control
  • Care for isolation patients
  • Practice hand hygiene and equipment cleaning
Documentation
  • Document accurately and timely in nursing database and charts
Communication/Professionalism
  • Communicate effectively, report changes, participate in shift reports
  • Maintain professional relationships, resolve conflicts, support family-centered care
  • Notify nurse when leaving or returning to unit
  • Demonstrate non-judgmental behavior
Shared Leadership
  • Participate in meetings and unit discussions
Safety
  • Speak up about unsafe behavior, verify information, act promptly, promote safety, and practice self-checks
