Patient Care Technician - 4 East Med Surg - Full-Time Days with Rotation

Position Overview

UPMC Williamsport is seeking a Full-Time Patient Care Technician for our 4 East Adult Med/Surg unit. This unit has 11 beds and operates hours from 7a-7p or 7p-7a. The position is full-time (36 hours/week) with rotating shifts, including every other weekend and holiday.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide patient care including assisting with procedures and activities of daily living, and supporting physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Report patient status changes to RN.
  2. Perform core nursing assistant duties (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care) and at least four additional tasks such as phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, dressing changes, Foley removal, point of care testing, bladder scans, or IV removal.
  3. Report equipment malfunctions, communicate effectively with departments, and maintain respectful relationships. Contribute to unit activities like responding to call lights, passing meals, and transporting patients.
  4. Receive feedback constructively, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review. Seek assistance and plan activities accordingly.
  5. Provide patient and family instruction under RN supervision. May apply and remove restraints as per protocol.
  6. Communicate clearly with the healthcare team, understand cultural diversity, and support safety. Develop productive relationships demonstrating accountability and enthusiasm.
  7. Adhere to policies and safety procedures, including standard precautions.
  8. Support departmental changes, assume responsibility, and participate in quality initiatives.
  9. Document accurately in medical records and perform clerical tasks as needed.
  10. Achieve and maintain competencies, including advanced skills like phlebotomy, IV removal, EKG, and NG tube management based on department needs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year healthcare experience, or six months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with competency, or enrollment in a health sciences program with clinical rotations, or a bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC PCT class and basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer skills preferred.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • EMT or Paramedic certification or enrollment preferred.
Certifications and Clearances
  • CPR certification per AHA standards within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS preferred.
