The Patient Care Tech performs delegated direct patient care activities for an assigned group of patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position requires population-specific competencies and adherence to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on patient contact level.

Qualifications
  • Current BLS certification or completion within 90 days.
  • Successful completion of a recognized nursing assistant course or an accredited nursing program, including Nursing Fundamentals or Introduction to Nursing with skills lab or clinical rotation, or enrollment in a CNA training program within 45 days with completion within 90 days of hire. Verification via transcript or official notice required; OR
  • Three months of employment in an INTEGRIS patient care area with training and observation for nursing assistant duties, as certified by a clinical nurse manager or director; OR
  • 12 months of nursing assistant experience in an acute care, nursing home, home care, or long-term care setting; OR
  • Prior military hospital corpsman medical training.

Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Department-specific competencies will be completed during orientation. For Float Pool only: this role requires operation of an INTEGRIS-owned or personal vehicle, with a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

The Patient Care Tech's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing personal patient care tasks such as mouth care, bed making, bathing, perineal care, hair care, shaving, backrubs, and bedpan or urinal emptying.
  • Assisting with patient safety, including verifying identification bands, following fall protocols, using restraints appropriately, positioning patients, and reporting incidents.
  • Performing treatments such as urinary catheter care, enema administration, sitz baths, compresses, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Retrieving and transporting medications as needed.

The role reports to an assigned leader. Mental health staff must be capable of assisting with physical restraints using the Behavior Management Technique System. Additional physical or respiratory requirements may apply; consult Risk Management or Employee Health for details.

Potential exposures include infections, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, and chemicals. Standard precautions must be followed. PACU staff may be exposed to X-ray procedures and low levels of anesthetic gases.
