Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is seeking a Patient Care Tech to support clinical staff by providing direct patient care. The role involves assisting with daily living activities, vital signs, specimen collection, and preparing rooms for procedures on a 12-hour day shift (7:00 AM–7:30 PM) with rotating weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years of age.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within six weeks of hire.

Responsibilities

• Delivers assigned patient care and treatment as delegated by an RN or LPN.
• Performs or assists patients with activities including personal hygiene, bathing, ambulation, transporting, range of motion exercises, dressing/undressing, feeding, changing bandages, elimination needs, and emptying drainage devices.
• Responds to patient calls and ensures patient safety and comfort through safe patient handling techniques, regular rounding, environmental maintenance, equipment maintenance, and other safety measures.
• Calculates intake and output (excluding IVs). Measures vital signs. Performs bedside blood glucose testing. Documents in patient health records.
• Initiates or assists with emergency measures (CPR, protection from injury).
• Prepares patients and rooms for procedures, admissions, and transfers; discharges patients as needed.
• Observes and reports changes in patient condition to the nurse.
• Collects and labels specimens; operates and maintains equipment.
