Position Summary:

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is part of the patient care team, responsible for technical, multi-skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. The PCA works under the supervision of a registered nurse, who delegates tasks based on patient needs and the PCA's skills. All deviations from expected patient parameters must be reported to the nurse.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with care team members to ensure consistent, high-quality care, and promote positive staff relations. Demonstrate understanding of continuous improvement, teamwork, and the hospital's mission, vision, and values.
  2. Perform basic patient care activities under RN supervision, report changes in patient condition, and assist in emergency responses.
  3. Assist patients with activities of daily living, including feeding, bathing, toileting, and hygiene.
  4. Follow departmental policies, procedures, safety standards, infection control, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  5. Respect patient privacy and comfort, communicate effectively with patients and families, and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Perform clerical duties as needed, such as answering phones, greeting visitors, and managing call lights.
  7. Engage in professional development through workshops, training, and literature review; maintain competencies.
  8. Perform other assigned tasks as listed.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Graduation from a practical nursing program or completion of one of the following:
    • A Certified PCA/PCT Program.
    • A Certified Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent.
    • A Medical Assistant Program.
    • An EMT program.
    • A phlebotomy training program.
    Six months of direct patient care experience is preferred.
