Description

Employed by PAGNY for The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H), this role involves delivering medical and mental health care, discharge planning, and providing comprehensive, evidence-based therapeutic interventions within the NYC jail system. The service includes specialty housing units, a 24-hour psychiatric on-call service, creative arts programming, DBT training, clinics, substance use treatment, and re-entry services.

General Overview:

The Patient Care Associate (PCA), under the supervision of a licensed nurse or medical staff, assists with patient care activities such as veni-puncture, finger-sticks, HIV testing and counseling, responding to emergencies, clerical duties, and observing patient conditions. The PCA reports any changes to nursing staff and contributes to patient safety and comfort.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer total or partial bed baths and assist with personal hygiene.
  • Transfer, position, and assist with range of motion exercises.
  • Assist with ambulation, activities of daily living, and feeding.
  • Prepare patients for meals, make beds, and tidy patient areas.
  • Record vital signs, perform EKGs, and document in electronic records.
  • Perform dressing changes, administer applications, and maintain intake/output records.
  • Notify medical staff of patient status changes and perform urine tests.
  • Assist in clinical activities such as HIV testing, EKGs, and lab follow-ups.
  • Maintain cleanliness and stock supplies in treatment areas.
  • Support team and maintain professional conduct and appearance.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, document encounters, and complete shift forms.

Activities:

  • Perform HIV testing, counseling, and data entry.
  • Assist with admissions, perform venipunctures, and manage quality controls.

Maintenance of Unit:

  • Clean and maintain equipment and treatment areas.
  • Replenish supplies and ensure security of equipment and keys.

Human Relations Skills:

  • Assist colleagues, communicate effectively, and maintain professionalism and respect for individuals.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Includes working day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 50 pounds (possibly up to 100 pounds with assistance). Exposure to chemical and infectious hazards and caring for uncooperative or confused patients are expected.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • EKG and Phlebotomy certification.
  • BCLS certification and computer skills.
  • HIV counseling certification preferred.
  • PCA/PCT/CNA and Infection Control certifications.
