The Patient Care Assistant provides basic direct patient care as delegated by clinical professional personnel, following delegation laws and current education. The PCA maintains a clean, safe environment for patients and visitors.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Population (Clinical): Engage in population-appropriate communication, understand growth and development milestones, give clear treatment instructions, involve family/guardians, identify physical limitations, respond to behavioral health issues, interpret data, and recognize signs of abuse or neglect.
  • Patient Care: Measure vital signs, record observations, assist with activities of daily living, provide hygiene, change linens, manage drainage and bodily fluids, utilize care equipment, perform treatments, and provide comfort measures. May also perform EKGs, blood glucose testing, and phlebotomy.
  • Communication: Report observations to RN, orient patients and visitors, document treatments, respond to nurse call system, and handle reception duties.
  • Environment: Maintain a clean and safe environment, restock supplies, and report maintenance issues.
  • Teamwork: Participate in admissions, transfers, discharges, and collaborate respectfully with team members.
  • Safety Measures: Ensure call lights are within reach, apply safety devices, use proper body mechanics, and follow precautions.
Qualifications

Minimum: High School Diploma or GED. No certification required. Experience: 0-6 months; preferred 1-2 years. Skills include proficiency in CPR, patient care skills, and either state-tested nursing aide training, hospital-specific training, or completion of a medical surgical rotation as a student. Candidates without these must complete UC Health competency training and orientation.
