Job Description

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) III performs duties to enhance patient experience while maintaining patient comfort and a safe patient environment. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH, promoting an ongoing partnership between patients, families, and healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age-specific. All direct patient care is under the supervision of and delegated by the Registered Nurse according to Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines. Additionally, a PCA III exhibits critical thinking skills in escalating concerns and can competently complete delegated tasks without coaching or direct oversight.

Responsibilities
  1. Clinical: Performs aspects of clinical care as assigned and instructed by the RN per Ohio Board of Nursing guidelines. Meets clinical skills competency standards. Capable of performing EKGs, Phlebotomy, Ostomy Care, and obtaining urine specimens from Foley Catheters. Maintains patient confidentiality and protects operations. Acts as a subject matter expert or clinical expert on the unit.
  2. Leadership & Accountability: Demonstrates advanced behavioral competencies, communicates effectively with patients, families, peers, and leadership. Serves as a proactive team member, fosters collaboration, and manages change effectively. Leads unit councils, committees, CIT projects, and initiatives. Acts as a primary preceptor and mentor, supports onboarding, and partners with educators.
  3. Environment and Safety: Promotes patient and unit safety, identifies hazards, escalates issues, and provides solutions.
  4. Comfort: Provides patient comfort and hygiene, documents appropriately, and models excellent patient hospitality.
  5. Communication: Orients patients and families, facilitates communication during hospitalization, leads unit and network updates, and effectively communicates process changes. Applies emotional intelligence in interactions.
Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Required Education: High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience; pursuing an associate degree or higher education is preferred.
  • Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and EMR systems.

Licenses, Registrations, & Certifications: Certification in AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is preferred; however, it is not required before or upon hire but must be obtained before patient contact.
