Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Patient Care Assistant I (PCA I) is responsible for supporting patient care activities under the supervision of a registered nurse in both clinic and inpatient settings. The PCA I collaborates with charge nurses and staff nurses to ensure patient needs are met, performs delegated patient care activities, and adheres to safety protocols. The role requires competence in basic patient care, medical terminology, communication, organizational, and computer skills. The PCA I demonstrates personal and professional effectiveness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Education/Licensure/Specialized Training:
   • High School diploma or GED, or appropriate technical training.
   • Certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant. Nursing students in accredited programs or recent graduates may be exempt from certification if they have completed their first clinical course. Certification is not required for hires before January 2021.
   • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an AHA-approved program.
   • Additional certificates as required by the unit or clinic.
2. Work Experience: One (1) year of related clinical experience preferred.
3. Skills/Knowledge: SAMA certification within 90 days of hire; EKG and/or Phlebotomy competency validation within 6 months if applicable to the specialty area.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Communication Skills: Above average verbal communication, with heavy public contact.
2. Other Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology and PC skills.
3. Work Schedule: Flexible availability including weekends and holidays.
