Primary Purpose

Performs specified patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse and is committed to the provision of patient-centered/patient-valued care.

Minimum Specifications
Education
  • Must have completed or hold one of the following:
  • A formal nurse aide course
  • A current certified nurse aide registry
  • A medical assistant course
  • A current medical assistant certificate
  • A patient care technician course
  • A current patient care technician certificate
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of professional nursing with documentation of basic nursing fundamentals from the school
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Parkland's job-specific training program
Experience

None required.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

Must have a current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire and/or placement in the job from one of the following: American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Skills or Special Abilities
  • Demonstrate basic patient care skills and skills in the use of supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with departmental personnel, nurses, physicians, patients, and families.
  • Demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors.
Responsibilities
  1. Perform specified patient care activities under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including hygiene care, unsterile treatments, vital signs, and range of motion exercises. Assist with mobility and feeding, ensuring patient-centered care.
  2. Serve as a patient advocate by responding to needs and requests, maintaining open communication, and respecting patient rights and confidentiality.
  3. Monitor patient status and respond to changes by notifying healthcare team members.
  4. Record activities such as vital signs and care outcomes accurately in accordance with nursing standards.
  5. Maintain sanitation, infection control, safety, and proper use of supplies and equipment. Report and correct environmental or equipment deficiencies.
  6. Escort patients, assist with cleaning, provide translation services if applicable, perform quality checks, and deliver specimens as needed.
  7. Identify opportunities for process improvements and suggest changes to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and patient satisfaction.
  8. Engage in ongoing education and professional development, applying new knowledge to practice.
  9. Stay informed about relevant rules, regulations, policies, and laws affecting patient care, and develop internal controls to ensure compliance.
