Job description

Overview

The PCA provides compassionate personal care and support services under the supervision of a registered nurse, assisting patients in achieving physical and emotional comfort and healing.

Responsibilities

Provides all personal care services in accordance with the plan of treatment assigned by the registered nurse, including but not limited to:

  1. Measuring and recording intake and output
  2. Measuring and recording vital signs, oxygen saturation, weight, and height
  3. Positioning, lifting, and turning patients
  4. Applying/utilizing special equipment
  5. Assisting with use of bedpan, urinal, or commode
  6. Ambulating the patient
  7. Pre-operative and post-operative care
  8. Applying/removing anti-embolism stockings and SCD devices
  9. Providing perineal care, vaginal irrigations (non-sterile), and sitz baths
  10. Administering non-medicated enemas
  11. Applying heat and cold therapy
  12. Caring for incontinent patients
  13. Providing skin care for immobilized patients
  14. Emptying colostomy bags
  15. Placing patients on cardiac monitors
  16. Feeding patients
  17. Collecting, labeling, and transporting lab specimens

Additionally:

  • Accurately documents care provided according to policies and procedures
  • Applies safety principles during patient care activities such as ambulation, transfers, and positioning
  • Participates in cost-effective utilization of supplies and maintains equipment and nursing units in a clean, safe condition
  • Performs basic care requirements consistently, including rounding, use of AIDET, applying the “4 Ps” (Pain, Position, Potty, Proximity of items), prompt response to patient needs, hand hygiene, and patient identification
  • Assists in performance improvement activities by serving on PI teams, supporting PI measures, and implementing necessary changes

  • Follows all DCH Health System policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Requires approved previous experience in patient care or completion of in-service education classes. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates with patient care experience, those enrolled in a nursing program, or with prior customer service experience are preferred. BLS certification is required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and understand English.
