Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a full-time Patient Care Assistant (PCA) for the General Medicine unit on 90 Blossom Street in Boston. Under the supervision of licensed personnel, you will assist patients with activities of daily living, monitor vitals, document in the electronic health record, and support the care team during rounds.

This position requires completing basic duties such as hygiene assistance, feeding, and mobility support, with rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends,

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
  • BLS, CMA/National Certification, and Nursing Assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience in patient care or elder care 0-1 year preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, bathing, dressing and eating.
  • Take vitals (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration) and document in EHR.
  • Assist with admissions/discharges and 1:1 patient observation for safety.
  • Keep patient rooms stocked, clean, and equipment functional; report malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with RNs and physicians and communicate patient care needs promptly.

Schedule
  • Days (7am-7pm) and Nights (7pm-7am,)
  • Mandatory weekend shifts every week.
  • (3x) shifts per week.
  • Holiday rotating schedule.

The General Medicine unit is in search of a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Full-time Patient Care Assistant (PCA).

The adult general medicine inpatient unit has eighteen-beds for patients, and is located in Boston, MA. The unit is devoted to the care of the acutely ill and Level 1 Trauma patients from the emergency and intensive care units. The patient population on this unit includes a diverse mix of medical diagnoses requiring complex nursing care.

The ideal applicant must be able to provide Day shift training and the described work schedule to be considered for an interview.

Summary

Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Also assists with taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Essential Functions
  • Performs patient care-related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including, but not limited to, performing and documenting point of care, vital signs, EKGs, bathing and other sanitary needs of patients, transferring and assisting with ambulation of patients, 1:1 patient observation for safety purposes, and phlebotomy. Assist RNs and physicians with other exams and treatments as required.
  • Completes all documentation such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assists patients with food tray setup, eating, and feeding, as needed.
  • Ensures that patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately, as needs indicate and as patient volumes change.
  • Retrieves equipment from other areas, sets up equipment, cleans equipment between patient use, and reports malfunctioning equipment per organizational policy.
  • Assists with admitting and discharging patients.
  • Facilitates orientation of new PCA team members as directed.
  • Interacts with patients, visitors, and other care team members effectively
  • Communicates with nursing staff effectively and in a timely manner regarding issues related to patient care and condition.
  • Fosters a positive, collaborative team environment that promotes teamwork and professional growth.
Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred

Licenses and Credentials

  • Basic Life Support [BLS]
  • Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification]
  • Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician [National Certification]
  • Nursing Assistant [LNA - New Hampshire] - New Hampshire Board of Nursing preferred

Experience

Experience working in patient care/elder care 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong patient/customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Proficient in computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.
