Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital invites applications for a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to provide continuous observation and individualized nursing support on-site in the 6 Surgical Unit. The role includes 7:00am–7:30pm shifts with weekend and holiday rotation.

Responsibilities cover one-on-one monitoring, safety, vital signs, EPIC documentation, and timely communications with licensed nurses. Requirements include a high school diploma and a BLS certification; 1 year of experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • BLS certification from American Heart Association required.
  • Minimum one year of relevant healthcare experience preferred.
  • Experience with EPIC or similar EMR software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one continuous observation and monitoring for assigned patients.
  • Perform de-escalation interventions as needed to ensure safety.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Remain alert to changes in patient condition and nursing staff needs.
  • Assist with vital signs and transporting patients as delegated.
  • Stock linens and supplies for the unit as assigned.
  • Document observations and interventions accurately in EPIC.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently for assigned patients.
  • Notify nursing staff promptly about distress or changes in conditions.
  • Maintain professional composure in interactions with patients and families.
  • Follow hospital policies and unit procedures; perform other duties as assigned.
  • Uphold patient privacy and safety standards at all times.

Summary:

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides continuous observation and individual care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

Responsibilities:
  1. 1. Provide continuous, one-on-one observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
  2. 2. Provide evidence-based de-escalation interventions
  3. 3. Maintain a safe environment for self, patients and others
  4. 4. Remain alert and attentive at all times to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
  5. 5. Provide direct patient care such as vital signs and transporting patients to other departments as delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  6. 6. Stock linens and supplies
  7. 7. Document observations, interventions, and any pertinent information accurately and in a timely manner within EPIC
  8. 8. Prioritize and execute task for the assigned patients in a timely and efficient manner
  9. 9. Alert nursing staff promptly to any signs of distress, discomfort, or changes in the patient's condition.
  10. 10. Maintain a calm and professional presence for the patient and their family members.
  11. 11. Follow all hospital or facility protocols and procedures related to patient observation and safety.
  12. 12. Other duties as assigned.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
  1. 1. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology preferred.
  2. 2. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  3. 3. Experience working with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  4. 4. Experience working in an electronic medical record (i.e. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  1. 1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  2. 2. Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  3. 4. Years of relevant experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience is preferred
  4. 5. Years of supervisory experience: None
