Job summary

Akron Children9s is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to provide continuous observation and one-on-one care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The role is PRN with a days-variable schedule and onsite work.

Responsibilities include monitoring, vital signs, documentation in EPIC, de-escalation, safety, and timely communication with nursing staff. Experience in healthcare and knowledge of medical terminology are preferred, with BLS certification required.

• Prioritize and complete tasks for assigned patients.
• Alert nursing staff to signs of distress or changes in patient condition.
• Maintain a calm, professional presence for patients and families.
• Follow hospital protocols for patient observation and safety.
• Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous, one-on-one observation and monitoring of assigned patients.
• Provide evidence-based de-escalation interventions
• Maintain a safe environment for self, patients and others
• Remain alert and attentive at all times to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
• Provide direct patient care such as vital signs and transporting patients to other departments as delegated by and under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Stock linens and supplies
• Document observations, interventions, and any pertinent information accurately and in a timely manner within EPIC
• Prioritize and execute task for the assigned patients in a timely and efficient manner
• Alert nursing staff promptly to any signs of distress, discomfort, or changes in the patient's condition.
• Maintain a calm and professional presence for the patient and their family members.
• Follow all hospital or facility protocols and procedures related to patient observation and safety.
• Other duties as assigned.

Other Information

Technical Expertise

• Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology preferred.
• Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
• Experience working with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
• Experience working in an electronic medical record (i.e. EPIC) or similar software is preferred.

Education and Experience

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required
• Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
• Years of relevant experience: Minimum one (1) year of experience is preferred
• Years of supervisory experience: None
