A Day in the Life

The Patient Access Support Specialist for the Coronary Renal Denervation (CRDN) Operating Unit (OU) supports patient access to new technology by assisting physicians, hospitals, and patients with prior authorization and appeal management. This role interfaces with commercial and government payers to ensure insurance eligibility, benefits, and medical necessity requirements are met, and submissions are made for authorization. Ongoing provider education and support are key to optimizing coverage and reimbursement. The specialist also keeps the CRDN Reimbursement team informed on payer coverage issues and trends, mostly working telephonically within approved guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians, hospitals, and patients in understanding coverage policies, prior authorization, and denial management for renal denervation.
  • Validate patient insurance coverage and benefits.
  • Check requirements for prior authorization and initiate requests as needed.
  • Coordinate paperwork and clinical notes for timely submission.
  • Follow up with payers to monitor authorization status.
  • Provide updates to stakeholders.
  • Write persuasive appeal letters to address payer objections, supporting medical necessity with provider documentation, and submit appeals per payer processes.
  • Work within guidelines, policies, and procedures using clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Stay informed on payer coverage and authorization requirements.
  • Create and maintain reports on payer decisions, issues, and trends.
  • Develop relevant educational materials for physicians, hospitals, and patients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preference for candidates to work hybrid from Mounds View, MN. Remote work within the U.S. may be considered for the right candidate.

Must Have; Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 2 years of experience in case management, prior authorization, or utilization review.
  • Or 0 years with an advanced degree.
Nice To Have
  • Understanding of healthcare payment, reimbursement, and coverage issues.
  • Clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Medtronic reimbursement policies.
  • Excellent communication skills adaptable to different audiences.
  • Customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, including documentation and multi-tasking.
  • Ability to learn multiple CRM software programs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and conditions.
  • Relationship-building skills with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed organization.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Self-motivated with initiative.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Travel less than 10%.
