Job Description
The Patient Access Specialist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NMHC, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:

  1. Practice Patients First philosophy and uphold high standards of customer service, fostering a team atmosphere.
  2. Respond to questions and concerns effectively.
  3. Notify Team Lead or Operations Coordinator of extraordinary issues.
  4. Maintain patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.
  5. Provide exceptional customer service to establish a positive first impression.
  6. Exceed consumer requests and escalate issues as necessary.
  7. Accurately collect and verify patient demographic information.
  8. Coordinate with hospital departments and physician offices for scheduling.
  9. Schedule appointments and perform medical necessity checks.
  10. Inform patients of financial issues and complete out-of-pocket estimations.
  11. Provide training and education as needed.
  12. Manage work schedule efficiently and complete assigned tasks.
  13. Participate in cross-training and quality assurance activities.
  14. Use effective service recovery skills and adhere to policies.
  15. Ensure patient safety and avoid financial or safety risks.

Communication and Collaboration:

  1. Communicate with patients about referrals and consultations.
  2. Collect authorization numbers and resolve operational issues.
  3. Participate in meetings and support internal communication.
  4. Show teamwork and respect diverse opinions.

Technology:

  1. Utilize online systems for order retrieval and insurance verification.
  2. Document appropriately in Epic and verify insurance benefits.
  3. Complete accurate handoff instructions and notes.

Efficiency, Process Improvement, and Business Growth:

  1. Proactively prevent issues and verify data accuracy.
  2. Analyze account activity and suggest improvements.
  3. Participate in quality improvement activities and training.
  4. Adjust processes to meet standards and learn healthcare policies.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years customer service or medical office experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data-entry and typing (40 wpm).
  • Ability to multitask, organize, and problem-solve.

Preferred:

  • Additional education or language skills.
  • Healthcare finance and insurance experience.
  • Experience in patient scheduling and registration.
