Job summary

Ashtabula Regional Medical Center in Ohio seeks a Patient Access Specialist to greet, register, and verify patient demographics and insurance information for all ARMC locations. You will answer calls, schedule appointments, collect co-pays, and ensure accurate data entry in Health Information systems.

The ideal candidate has strong communication skills, a high school diploma or GED, and at least one year of patient financial services exposure.

Qualifications

  • One year customer service experience dealing with the public on the phone or in person.
  • One Year patient financial services background (registration, billing, medical office, customer service, follow-up, or collections) preferred.
  • Must possess ability to work effectively in complex environment of a healthcare system.
  • Higher Education and/or other training can offset requested work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Central Registration Manager, the Patient Access Specialist provides a positive patient encounter as first impression of the ARMC Healthcare System.
  • Responsible for answering phones, greeting patients, arriving, checking-in/out, registering, scheduling and confirming appointments for patients for all areas serviced by the Central Registration Department.
  • Ensure accuracy of demographic, insurance, and financial information through interviews and verification of insurance benefits and collecting necessary signatures for consent to clinical treatments.
  • Provides general clerical support including filing, scanning, faxing, and prepping of forms, files, and reports as necessary.

Completion of High School or GED; Must have excellent written and verbal persuasion and communication skills. Medical terminology experience preferred. Basic PC software application knowledge and ability to use multiple data systems. Extensive knowledge of billing and insurance preferred. Organizational skills required. Keyboarding skills essential (40 WPM)

Required Physical And Environmental Demands

Position is primarily seated at a desk using telephone, keyboard, and PC - must stand/walk/bend to retrieve documents from printer, file, and use copier. Position may require periodic or routine use of laptop computer on wheeled device for bedside registration or Kiosk when applicable (walk/stand for this). May be required to escort patients to location of care using wheelchair transport. Will service trauma patients, visualize blood, smells, etc. associated with patient contact. Will be required to travel/relocate to additional ARMC sites as needed for department coverage.

General Summary

Responsible for answering phones, greeting patients, arriving, checking-in/out, registering, scheduling and confirming appointments for patients for all areas serviced by the Central Registration Department. Ensure accuracy of demographic, insurance, and financial information through interviews and verification of insurance benefits and collecting necessary signatures for consent to clinical treatments. Provides general clerical support including filing, scanning, faxing, and prepping of forms, files, and reports as necessary. Uses ARMC systems/applications to capture and communicate data to Health Information systems, patient care departments, and Patient Financial Services for billing. Enters appropriate diagnosis, procedure, and physician information for medical record. Communicates with insurance companies and physicians regarding coverage and authorization requirements. Uses on-line, web based, and telecommunication verification systems to ensure accuracy and to expedite payment. Collects co-pays and deductibles. Ensures compliance with local, state, federal, third party EMTALA, and JCAHO regulations. Ensures a seamless model of access for patients, physicians and family members. This position encounters Protected Health Information as part of regular responsibilities.
