Job Summary
Responsible for supporting departmental efficiencies, including scheduling, registration, patient pre-admission, admission, reception, and discharge functions. Must obtain complete and accurate patient demographic information. Patient Access representatives employ proper, compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during, and after the date of service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet customers following Conifer Standards of Care, provide world-class customer service, complete full patient registration at the date of service, adhere to financial and cash control policies, thoroughly explain and secure hospital and patient legal forms (e.g., Advance Directives, Consent for Treatment). Scan Protected Health Information, create and file patient information packets for upcoming hospital services. Assist with scheduling diagnostic procedures, entering data into scheduling systems, providing appointment instructions, and other tasks as needed.
- Educate patients about financial liabilities, employ proper collection techniques, perform hospital cash reconciliation, and ensure secured payment entry following policies.
- Verify medical necessity according to CMS guidelines, verify insurance benefits and coverage, complete registration and financial clearance activities, obtain insurance authorizations, and secure inpatient visit notifications to payors. May assist with scheduling and coordinating post-discharge care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Minimum typing speed of 35 WPM
- Working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer
- Knowledge of hospital environment preferred
- Customer service skills and experience
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Understanding of Third Party Payor requirements and Compliance standards (preferred)
- Ability to perform duties in at least two Patient Access service areas, including ED
- Use proper negotiation techniques to professionally collect owed money
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients
- Interpret physician orders, medical terminology, and insurance cards accurately
Additional Requirements
Must obtain and provide confirmation of required vaccinations, including COVID-19, influenza, and others as mandated by law.
Education / Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 0-1 year in a Customer Service role
- 0-1 year administrative experience in healthcare or related fields preferred
- Some college coursework preferred

- Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods
- Occasionally lift/carry up to 25 lbs
- Frequent standing, sitting, walking
- Occasional assistance with mobility (e.g., pushing wheelchairs)
Work Environment
- Hospital setting with potential exposure to life-threatening conditions
