Biweekly Work Pattern:
W1: Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri
W2: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat

Job Description

ER Registration - FT Evening shift (rotating start times of 3pm and 4pm, 8-hour shifts). Requires every other weekend and holiday work. Includes 2 weeks of full-time day shift training upon hire.

Job Summary
Provides a positive patient experience to patients and families. Demonstrates strong communication and customer service skills while registering patients. Accurately searches and selects the correct patient. Gathers complete and accurate demographic and insurance information from patients and families. Identifies uninsured patients for referral to Medical Assistance/Charity Care evaluation. Retrieves orders, confirms medical necessity, and answers phones for outpatient visits. Gathers worker's compensation or auto insurance information from accident patients, collects patient out-of-pocket liability and copays, verifies insurance, and confirms referrals and authorizations are on file if required.

Essential Functions
* Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with Jefferson's values.
* Gathers accurate demographic information to identify Jefferson patients with existing medical record numbers or assigns new ones.
* Requests photo ID and insurance cards, scanning copies.
* Records complete and accurate demographic and insurance information. Enters orders and confirms medical necessity for outpatient visits, if appropriate. Interviews patients to complete the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSPQ) questionnaire for all Medicare patients.
* Uses RTE (Real Time Eligibility), Phreesia, or payer websites to verify insurance coverage and benefits, including out-of-pocket liability. Ensures proper referral and authorizations are on file as needed.
* Completes all activities adhering to departmental and institutional protocols.
* Ensures regulatory and compliance requirements are met.
* Achieves individual and team performance metrics.
* Communicates and collects out-of-pocket liability from patients at the time of service.
* Rotates assignments across all points of service within Patient Access (Outpatient Registration and Emergency Department).

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):
Emergency Department:
Proficient with computer and Microsoft Office skills; familiar with healthcare EHR applications such as EPIC and Cerner.
Knowledge of medical terminology and third-party insurance coverage, including managed care plans.
Strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Outpatient/Admissions:
Proficient with computer and Microsoft Office skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; excellent customer service; knowledge of practices and tools for effective communication.
Meticulous attention to detail.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:
Required High School Diploma or GED; Associate's degree in healthcare or business administration preferred.
Experience:
Outpatient/Admissions: Minimum 3 years of customer service experience in customer-facing roles.
Emergency Department: Minimum 3 years of experience in hospital, physician practice, or related healthcare environment customer service. Prior registration experience in Emergency Dept preferred.

Additional Information
Outpatient/Admissions: Previous experience working in insurance, physician's/medical office, or hospital registration preferred.
