Patient Access Coordinator - Night Shift - ED - FT

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Creates the first impression of Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) services to patients, families, and other external customers upon arrival. Assumes clinical and financial risk of the organization when collecting and documenting information on the patient's behalf. Completes processes such as proper patient identification, scheduling, registration, financial clearance, authorization and referral validation, creating estimates, and payment collection when applicable. Connects patients to financial advocacy resources when appropriate, obtains signatures on regulatory paperwork, and communicates information clearly to patients and their families about their financial responsibilities.

Displays attention to detail, excellent communication skills, empathy, and compassion. Must multitask, work efficiently under pressure in a high-acuity environment, and collaborate with healthcare professionals. Ability to stand for long periods and use a computer on wheels at bedside. Adheres to EMTALA guidelines, AHN policies, and standard precautions to ensure safety and compliance.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts scheduling, registration, and admitting functions independently at bedside, verifies insurance information, and collects clinical data as required. Ensures timely billing, including workers' compensation and motor vehicle claims. Obtains signatures on regulatory paperwork.
  • Identifies patient financial responsibilities, calculates estimates, collects liabilities, and posts payments. Documents self-pay accounts for follow-up.
  • Provides a positive patient experience, communicates effectively with patients and healthcare staff, and promotes teamwork. Maintains productivity standards and suggests improvements.
  • Maintains confidentiality, ensures accurate registration during system downtime, and acts as a resource for registration issues during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Remains calm and professional in stressful situations, responds to inquiries from various stakeholders, and adheres to organizational policies and training requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma/GED or 1-3 months related experience or training; or equivalent combination.
  • Experience with PC operation and software applications.
  • At least one year of related experience preferred, especially in medical, financial, or customer service settings.
