Job description

Overview

The Patient Access Specialist is responsible for all admitting duties for patients at Bon Secours - Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. The role includes assigning accurate MRNs, completing medical‑necessity and compliance checks, providing patient instructions, collecting insurance information, processing physician orders, and operating the telephone switchboard. Excellent customer service, measured by PressGaney, is essential. The specialist must meet point‑of‑service goals, conduct quality audits, pre‑register patient accounts, explain consent and medical forms, and assist with clean claim rates.

Responsibilities
  • Assign accurate MRNs and complete medical‑necessity/compliance checks.
  • Provide patient instructions, collect insurance information, and process physician orders.
  • Utilize overlay tools and operate the telephone switchboard for incoming and outgoing calls.
  • Maintain excellent customer service with compassion in all interactions.
  • Achieve point‑of‑service goal metrics and use quality auditing/reporting systems.
  • Conduct audits, ensure complete and timely forms, and provide statistical data to leadership.
  • Pre‑register patient accounts, obtaining demographic, insurance, and financial information.
  • Explain and collect signatures for consent and medical forms.
  • Review eligibility responses, enter benefit data to support point‑of‑service collections, and assist with clean claim rates.
  • Screen medical necessity using ABN software and distribute ABN appropriately.
  • Distribute and document other designated forms and pamphlets.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Minimum of 1 year of customer‑service experience.
  • Inquisitive and open to innovation, including AI, to improve processes.
  • CRCR certification required within 9 months of hire (company‑paid).
  • Strong phone and interpersonal skills; ability to work onsite at the hospital.
  • Knowledge of revenue‑cycle processes, billing, and medical‑necessity screening is preferred.
Compensation & Benefits

Hourly pay: $17.00–$18.15, based on experience.
