About the Program
The Pathways to Policing Program is designed to bring non-traditional candidates into law enforcement, removing barriers for those interested in the career. Preference is given to candidates with cultural competency skills, experience with diverse populations, or bilingual abilities. Candidates earn pay and benefits while attending a full-time peace officer education program in Brooklyn Park, MN. A college degree (2 or 4 years) in any field is required by July 31, 2025. No prior law enforcement experience is necessary. Upon completing the program (~22 weeks), trainees must attain POST licensure to become full-time sworn police officers.

Program Details
Applicants are hired as police trainees, attending college coursework and training at Hennepin Technical College for approximately 22 weeks, then taking the licensing exam. All course fees and equipment are covered. Successful trainees are promoted to probationary police officers.
Timeline and Application

Essential duties: Attend and participate in the education program, complete coursework, maintain physical conditioning, attain POST licensure, and commit at least two years as a police officer.
Minimum qualifications: Degree from a regionally accredited institution by July 31, 2025; U.S. citizenship; valid driver’s license; no felony convictions; not having completed a MN Skills program or taken the MN POST exam.
Preferred qualifications: Bilingual proficiency, translator certification, experience with diverse populations, and community engagement skills.
