Job summary

Penn State Health’s Pathology department seeks a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) responsible for gross examination and sectioning of surgical specimens. Under supervision of a Pathologist, the PA ensures timely grossing, follows protocols to aid diagnosis, and coordinates with multiple sections and providers.

Cross-training in other sections may occur. The ideal candidate holds a NACCLS-accredited PA program degree or a related bachelor’s with two years of PA experience; ASCP certification is

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from a NACCLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program or a related bachelor’s with two years on-the-job PA experience.
• Applicants trained outside the United States must provide equivalency evaluation to ensure it meets CLIA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination and sectioning of surgical pathology specimens under supervision.
• Ensure timely completion of grossing per protocols to aid diagnosis.
• Coordinate functions between Grossing, other pathology sections, surgical services and providers.
• Maintain logs and records as required by department standards, regulatory and accrediting bodies.
• May cross-train or assist in other pathology laboratory sections as needed.

Education

NACCLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program

Bachelor’s degree + 2 years on-the-job experience as Pathologists’ Assistant

ASCP certification (preferred)
