Job summary

WVU Medicine in Morgantown seeks a Pathologists’ Assistant Supervisor to lead and coordinate the gross rooms, ensuring high-quality patient care. You will oversee staffing, training, policy implementation, and accreditation readiness across the Morgantown campus.

The role requires ASCP certification, state licensure, and several years of experience, with leadership experience valued. You will partner with Pathologists and Medical Directors within a quaternary academic medical center.

Qualifications

  • ASCP Pathologists’ Assistant certification is required.
  • Current licensure as required by the state where services are provided.
  • Four (4) years of experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
  • Five (5) years or more experience and prior leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate workflow across gross rooms from receipt to histology and monitor tissue quality.
  • Oversee staffing of all gross rooms on the Morgantown campus, including PATHASSTS and technicians.
  • Provide strategic input for future growth and hospital/system expansion.
  • Monitor policies and procedures; create and implement new policies as appropriate.
  • Maintain accreditation readiness at all times for oversight areas.
  • In‑services staff on new policies and monitor compliance.
  • Monitor daily gross room workflows and deploy personnel accordingly.
  • Supervise staff and oversee all gross room workflows and processes.
  • Perform daily pathology functions including frozen sections and sample processing.
  • Assist in quality improvement initiatives and counsel staff on quality issues.
  • Document training and competency assessments per standards.
  • May train pathology residents/fellows and lab personnel as needed.
  • Collaborate with Pathologists and Medical Director to meet center needs.
  • Participate in recruiting, hiring and staff evaluations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

This position supervises and coordinates the staff and operations of the various Gross Rooms of the quaternary academic medical center in support of high-quality patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • 1. Current certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant through the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)
  • 2. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:
EXPERIENCE:
  • 1. Four (4) years of experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
  • 1. Five (5) years or more experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant
  • 2. Prior leadership experience to include evidence of involvement in quality initiatives and staff oversight
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 1. Coordinate workflow in conjunction with other laboratories and clinical services for all tissue samples from gross room receipt through arrival in histology with monitoring of tissue quality to ensure optimum processing while identifying areas of improvement and implementing improvements to gain operational and clinical efficiencies.
  • 2. Provide oversight of operations and staffing of all gross rooms in the Morgantown campus, to include Pathologists’ Assistants, Gross Room technicians, and trainees.
  • 3. Provides strategic input in planning towards future states with hospital and system growth.
  • 4. Monitors current policies and procedures; creates and implements new policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • 5. Maintains accreditation readiness at all times of areas of oversight.
  • 6. In-services Pathologists’ Assistants and other Gross Room staff on new policies and procedures and monitors compliance.
  • 7. Monitors workflow in the Gross Rooms daily and deploys personnel appropriately.
  • 8. Supervises staff and oversees all Gross Room related workflows and processes while maintaining timely, high-quality work.
  • 9. Performs daily pathology functions including frozen sections and processing specimens from various locations including but not limited to the operating room.
  • 10. Assists in quality improvement initiatives and counsels staff on quality issues.
  • 11. Documents training and competency assessments for staff following accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • 12. May train pathology residents/fellows, pathologists’ assistant students, and other pathology lab personnel as needed.
  • 13. Works cooperatively with Pathologist(s) and Medical Director(s) to meet the needs of a quaternary academic medical center as well as community and critical access hospitals with the WVU Health System.
  • 14. Participates in recruiting, hiring and orientation as well as completes performance evaluations of staff.
  • 15. Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • 1. Able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
  • 2. Visual acuity must not be impaired.
  • 3. Able to lift or pull 25 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • 1. May be exposed to fumes, chemicals, vibrations, noise, blood/bodily fluids, and infectious disease.

  • 3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with senior level management, providers, pathologists, providers and lab personnel while fostering teamwork, delegation and ensuring accountability.

  • 6. Advanced evaluative and objective critical thinking skills
  • 7. Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
  • 8. Skills in exercising initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgment with the ability to solve problems, resolve conflicts and make sound decisions.
