UChicago Medicine is seeking a qualified Pathologists’ Assistant for the Anatomic Pathology Lab. The role is 100% onsite in the greater Chicagoland area, focused on dissections, assisting diagnosis, and training residents.

Job Description

Be a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Pathologists’ Assistant in the Anatomic Pathology Lab department. This 100% onsite position requires relocation/being based in the greater Chicagoland area. You will be responsible for gross pathology dissection, gross description, and sampling of biopsies and complex surgical tissue specimens, and for aiding pathologists in diagnosis. You will also assist resident and medical student teaching, oversee routine lab activities, and perform biobanking duties for the Human Tissue Resource Center.

Essential Job Functions
  • Partner with the section supervisor to ensure efficient day‑to‑day operations.
  • Assist in development and implementation of new and revised procedures.
  • Promote teamwork through effective communication and assistance to staff, faculty, and other health professionals.
  • Provide coverage in the absence of the section supervisor.
  • Prioritize workload, respond to changes, and incorporate STAT requests or workload fluctuations.
  • Prepare and dissect surgical biopsies and large complex specimens in collaboration with pathologists.
  • Prepare specimens for gross digital photography and photograph them while maintaining patient identification.
  • Execute and assist residents with intra‑operative consultations.
  • Provide support and guidance for residents and technicians on autopsy services, including organ evisceration, brain and spinal cord removal, and organ dissection.
  • Assist in distributing tissues and organs to approved researchers, and perform technical and clerical tasks related to research projects.
  • Provide patient‑focused care through accurate performance of routine and complex tests at pre‑analytic, analytic, and post‑analytic stages.
  • Train, assist, and guide techs and pathology residents in gross description, dictation, dissection techniques, specimen handling procedures, LIS data entry, and safe use of instruments and equipment.
  • Participate in hiring new staff and provide performance feedback.
  • Participate in quality and process improvement, identify ways to improve work processes, patient and staff safety, and review and implement SOP changes.
  • Practice proficient and safe use of all necessary equipment within defined turnaround times.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Graduate of an NAACLS‑accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program (Master’s degree) or on‑the‑job training with PA (ASCP) certification.
  • Pathologists’ Assistant Certification (or eligibility) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP): PA (ASCP).
  • Knowledge of dissection technique, equipment, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of digital photographic technique and equipment; experience with computer applications.
  • Ability to interact and communicate professionally with pathologists, pathology residents, other health care professionals, and laboratory colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently, maintain composure under stress and meets time deadlines, and exercise sound judgment during stressful situations.
  • Display leadership qualities including effective communication skills.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work within narrow timeframes while remaining organized with precise attention to detail.
