Job summary

Albany Medical Center’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant to join our academic medical center. You will work with pathologists, residents, and histology staff in a busy surgical pathology environment and play an active role in education and laboratory practice.

The position involves gross examination, specimen handling, intraoperative consultation prep, teaching residents, and contributing to quality improvement within a collaborative team.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program, ASCP PA(ASCP) certification, NYS license (or eligibility).
• Strong knowledge of gross anatomy and surgical pathology, specimen handling and safety.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-volume academic environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, dissection and sampling of a broad spectrum of surgical pathology specimens.
• Evaluate and prepare tissue for intraoperative consultation and frozen sections with pathologists.
• Photograph and document gross specimens, ensuring accurate orientation and submission.
• Serve as a resource for difficult specimens and mentor residents and learners in grossing techniques.
• Collaborate with pathologists, residents, histology staff, and lab leadership to improve quality and workflow.
• Participate in quality improvement, procedure development, validation and departmental initiatives.
