Position: Pathologist Assistant (PA) Supervisor

The PA Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the grossing area, autopsy suite, and pathology operations within the morgue. The role involves working collaboratively with laboratory management, administrators, and physicians to ensure a competent staff aligned with the VCUHS mission and vision.

  1. Scheduling, policy development, and general operational duties.
  2. Training new hires and managing daily operations from specimen accessioning through processing.
  3. Providing technical instruction to lab personnel and residents, documenting training and competency.
  4. Maintaining laboratory procedure manuals and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  5. Managing technical QC/QA functions.
  6. Assisting pathologists with grossing of surgical specimens, conducting human postmortem external examinations, and resident training.
  7. Performing tasks under the supervision of Attending Pathologists.
  8. Coordinating with the Medical Director and supervising resident training.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Certified as a Pathologists' Assistant by ASCP or eligible within 3 months of hire.
  • Current PA (ASCP) Certification.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a PA, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in histology, histology procedures, and dissection.
  • Masters Degree in Science from an accredited PA program.
  • Ability to perform independently and collaborate with management on personnel issues.
  • Supervisory experience with gross room, morgue, and autopsy personnel.
  • On-call rotation for weekend autopsy coverage.
Physical and Other Requirements:
  • Physical lifting of 50-100 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, frequent bending, reaching.
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced, noisy environment with multiple priorities and frequent changes.
