Job Overview: A leading law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent with a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technologies. The ideal candidate will have over 3 years of experience in patent prosecution, with knowledge of patent portfolio analysis, due diligence, or other IP transactional matters. Responsibilities include preparing patent applications, communicating with clients and the USPTO, and working effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Location
Duties
- Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
- Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices regarding factual and scientific matters.
- Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions, performing research as needed.
- Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve complex patent issues.
- Act as a liaison between inventors and the USPTO throughout the patent application process.
- Communicate with clients, staff, and PTO personnel via various channels.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in interactions.
- Organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks under strict deadlines.
- Stay updated with technology trends and recommend solutions.
- Participate in continuing education to maintain professional credentials.
- Manage and analyze data for reports as needed.
Requirements
- Over 3 years of experience in patent prosecution or related IP areas.
- Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
- Registered to practice before the USPTO or qualified to sit for the patent bar.
- Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of patent procedures and standards in relevant areas.
- Familiarity with current and emerging technologies.
- Excellent research, organization, and time management skills.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and time management software.
- Experience with prosecution docketing systems is a plus.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
- Willingness to work additional hours as needed.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering or science fields; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
Certifications
- USPTO registration or qualification to sit for the patent bar preferred.
Skills
- Expertise in patent prosecution and application preparation.
- Strong technical background in relevant engineering or science disciplines.
- Proficient in research, analysis, and documentation.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with docketing systems is advantageous.
