Job Overview:
A prominent law firm is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Patent Agent to join their intellectual property team. The ideal candidate will have a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technologies, with at least 3 years of experience in patent prosecution. The role requires expertise in drafting patent applications, responding to communications from patent offices, and managing complex patent issues. Location:

Duties:

  • Draft and prepare patent applications, incorporating the scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices concerning factual and scientific matters.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions and research, investigating specific technologies as needed.
  • Analyze complex patent issues and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, and PTO personnel through face-to-face interactions, email, and phone calls.
  • Maintain professional relationships with clients, lawyers, and staff while safeguarding confidentiality.
  • Manage multiple tasks efficiently, meeting deadlines in a cost-effective manner.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and provide recommendations for future technology needs.
  • Participate in continuing education to remain knowledgeable of current patent prosecution issues and trends.
  • Maintain and analyze data used for lawyer and staff reports, including running and distributing reports as needed.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in patent prosecution or a related intellectual property field.
  • Proven ability to manage complex patent issues and apply appropriate solutions.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prepare and communicate complex technical information effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Experience with patent application preparation, especially in scientific and technical fields.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks under tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines or manage peak workload periods.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred).

Certifications:

  • Qualified to sit for the patent bar.
  • USPTO registration preferred.

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent prosecution and patent application preparation.
  • Strong technical background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or material science.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and time management software.
  • Familiarity with prosecution docketing systems is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to organize and manage tasks efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Hybrid work model (minimum 3 days per week in the office, up to 2 days per week remote).
