Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm located in Boston, MA, is actively seeking a Patent Agent with a background in biomedical, mechanical, or chemical engineering to support a high-volume intellectual property practice focused on medical technologies. This role is ideal for candidates with technical expertise and law firm experience who are looking to deepen their involvement in patent drafting, prosecution, and strategic patent counseling. The position provides a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced IP professionals in a collaborative and innovation-driven environment.

Duties:

  1. Perform technical research and prior art analysis to support patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments
  2. Review and interpret patents, scientific publications, and related technical literature
  3. Collaborate closely with attorneys on patent prosecution and litigation matters
  4. Prepare patent applications and draft responses to USPTO office actions
  5. Contribute to strategic patent portfolio development and client advisement
  6. Stay current with developments in relevant technological fields

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of prior law firm experience in patent drafting or prosecution
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex technical content and legal documentation
  • Proven analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-based setting

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Advanced technical degrees are considered a strong asset

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration required or eligibility to sit for the USPTO registration exam

Skills:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong scientific and technical comprehension, especially in medtech domains
