Responsibilities*
  • Assist guests and visitors by opening doors, answering questions and providing emergency and directional assistance.
  • Assist patients in and out of vehicles.
  • Escort patients in and out of buildings.
  • Assist patients to and from various locations.
  • Ensure access to buildings and driveways by directing traffic.
  • Maintain a clean working environment by sweeping up trash and debris.
  • Maintain an ample number of wheelchairs for public transport.
  • Disinfect wheelchairs.
  • Ensure gloves and disinfecting wipes are stocked up and ready for use.
  • Contact DPSS in emergency situations.
  • Contact the Lift Team when assistance is needed.
Required Qualifications*
  • High School Diploma, GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred candidate with previous hospital or public service experience.
  • Must be able to tolerate outside adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with patients/visitors.
  • Must be able to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, etc.
  • Computer knowledge.
  • Must be able to lift patients in/out of vehicles, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Must be able to drive motor vehicles as requested.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history check.
  • Must have a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
  • The validity of the license must be confirmed through the Michigan Secretary of State and the same confirmation shall be done quarterly.
Work Schedule

Standard hours: 32
Work days: Friday-Monday
Shift start/end times: 12:00am-8:30am

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
