Job Summary:

The Pastry Sous Chef will be responsible for ensuring the exceptional preparation of all desserts and pastries, maintaining a strong team environment consistent with Bern’s Steak House standards. This position is mainly evening shifts, requiring late-night hours.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Oversee daily functions of the pastry and Harry Waugh Room kitchen
  • Maintain a motivated, positive team environment
  • Assist in staff training
  • Uphold professionalism with team, management, and guests
  • Address team issues promptly
  • Monitor hours and business flow to ensure service quality
  • Ensure proper prep and execution of desserts
  • Maintain proper uniform and grooming standards
  • Communicate effectively within the team
  • Provide coaching and counseling fairly and consistently
  • Attend necessary meetings
  • Foster positive inter-departmental relations
  • Report shift issues to Pastry Management
  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance of equipment and areas
  • Work efficiently and effectively, including long hours standing over hot surfaces
  • Assist where needed in the pastry kitchen
  • Follow safety and sanitary procedures, including ServSafe standards
  • Maintain an orderly kitchen and stock supplies appropriately
  • Assist with food deliveries and supplies
  • Present a professional appearance and grooming
Education & Experience:
  • Preferably, a 2-year degree in Pastry Arts or related field, or equivalent experience
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
  • Ability to lift 25-50 lbs
  • Work long hours and communicate clearly
