Qualifications

  • Proven experience as Party Chief on heavy highway/bridge projects for at least 2-3 years.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work outdoors in varied conditions.
  • Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs and walk uneven terrain.
  • Experience with construction models and data workflows; familiarity with Trimble or Leica ecosystems and common data formats (e.g., LandXML, RXL/JXL, DWG/DXF).
  • Valid driver's license; ability to work outdoors in traffic/work zones and varied conditions; lift/carry 50 lbs; walk uneven terrain.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the field surveying crew and oversee all construction layout.
  • Ensure accuracy, safety practices, and timely deliverables.
  • Perform field calculations and manage survey data.
  • Perform and oversee construction staking for alignment, offsets, grades, slope stakes, blue‑tops, subgrade, base, pavement, barrier, walls, culverts, storm/sanitary, water, lighting, and signage.
  • Execute bridge/structure layout: footings, abutments, bents, pier locations, anchor bolts, bearing seats, camber/haunch checks, and deck screed elevations.
  • Verify design against field conditions; identify conflicts, RFIs, and needed design clarifications; collaborate with engineers and superintendents to resolve issues quickly.
  • Conduct as‑built surveys and produce field notes/sketches for quantities, pay items, and record drawings; support monthly pay applications and change orders.
  • Manage survey data: set up jobs, coding, feature libraries; import/export control and design files; maintain version control for models and alignments.
  • Perform field calculations: cuts/fills, slopes, vertical curves, offsets, superelevation, and deck grades; apply construction math and trigonometry for checks.
  • Operate and maintain instruments: robotic total stations, GNSS/RTK, digital levels, data collectors; perform daily calibration/check shots and minor adjustments.
  • Lead safety: conduct tailgate meetings, hazard assessments, traffic control awareness, underground utility locates, and work zone best practices.
  • Train and supervise crew members; set productivity targets; ensure clear, legible, complete field notes and electronic records.
  • Coordinate with paving, grading, structures, and utility crews to meet lookahead schedules and critical path activities; attend production and coordination meetings.
  • Handle admin tasks: timesheets, equipment logs, vehicle/mileage, material tickets related to survey operations, and documentation for audits.
  • Follow all company policies per Employee Handbook & Code of Conduct.
  • Follow all company safety guidelines.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.

Job description

Essential Functions/Position Responsibilities

Leads the field surveying crew and is responsible for all construction layout, quality, safety, and documentation that support highway and bridge build-out. This role plans and executes survey control, staking, and as-builts, while coordinating closely with project management, engineers, and field supervisors to keep crews building to line and grade.

  • Leads a survey crew to perform control, layout, and as‑built surveys for roadways, bridges, drainage, and utilities on active construction projects.
  • Owns field accuracy, safety practices, data integrity, and timely deliverables that enable daily production.
  • Plan daily survey operations: establish/verify horizontal and vertical control, check benchmarks, and create layout sequences for paving, structures, and underground work.
  • Perform and oversee construction staking for alignment, offsets, grades, slope stakes, blue‑tops, subgrade, base, pavement, barrier, walls, culverts, storm/sanitary, water, lighting, and signage.
