Job summary

The Summit Area YMCA is hiring part-time Sports Instructors to lead fun, engaging, and safe sports programs for children and youth in Summit, NJ. You’ll teach basketball, soccer, T-ball, tennis, football, boxing, and other sports, helping kids build confidence and skills while modelling core YMCA values.

Classes run weekday afternoons/evenings and some weekends, with pay ranging from $17 to $20 per hour. Benefits include free YMCA access, family membership discounts, and training opportunities.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 years.
• Experience coaching or teaching youth sports preferred.
• Experience with children in recreational or educational settings preferred.
• Ability to teach age-appropriate sports skills while keeping participants engaged and safe.
• Strong communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to stand, walk, run, demonstrate skills and handle equipment as needed.
• HS diploma or GED preferred.
• CPR/AED & First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months).

Responsibilities

• Lead engaging sports classes that promote skill development, teamwork and confidence.
• Teach sport-specific skills with emphasis on respect, fairness and good sportsmanship.
• Create a safe, positive, inclusive environment where every participant can succeed.
• Supervise participants, demonstrate skills, provide encouragement and keep children engaged.
• Set up, maintain and store sports equipment before and after programs.
• Build positive relationships with participants, parents, volunteers and staff.
• Follow YMCA policies and safety procedures and respond to incidents or concerns.
• Serve as a positive role model and ambassador for the YMCA and its mission.
