GENERAL PURPOSE:
Instructs students on water safety and proper swim techniques based on thorough knowledge of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor curriculum.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Program Supervisor and Assistant Program Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides swim instruction based on Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  2. Enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents. Makes rescues and administers first aid when necessary.
  3. Conducts oneself in a professional manner and be dressed in proper uniform. Stays alert and attentive at all times while on duty.
  4. Evaluates students’ progress. Completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
  5. Interacts with parents on the development of students’ swim skills. Tries to ensure parental satisfaction. Builds an effective and authentic relationship with students.
  6. Uses creative thinking skills to identify and resolve challenges that students encounter.
  7. Inspects pool areas before and after each class for possible maintenance, cleanliness or damage issues. Reports issues to management/maintenance staff as appropriate.
  8. Maintains and ensures proper storage of all pool equipment.
  9. Reports accidents and incidents to management. Completes required documentation and paperwork.
  10. Occasionally performs light cleaning duties.
  11. Required to attend in-service trainings.
  12. Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education and Experience:
    A. Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties: specialized training and certification (American Red Cross) as a Water Safety Instructor (swim instructor);
    AND
    B. Six (6) months general experience related to safe swimming, aquatics program participation or related background;
    OR
    C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of aquatics facilities; water safety practices, rules and guidelines; first aid, CPR. Working knowledge of swimming instruction techniques.
    Ability to plan, organize and develop swim lesson programs; demonstrate advanced swimming skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public (children and guardians), ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  3. Special Qualifications:
    Must be 16 years of age or older.
    Must be Red Cross certified as a Water Safety Instructor.
  4. Work Environment:
    Incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as swimming, walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking.
