A Veterinary Assistant is a key member of the hospital team who supports and assists veterinarians and veterinary technicians while ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates. The role involves providing high‑quality, efficient, and exceptional service to clients and their pets, and maintaining a clean, safe, and positive clinical environment.

Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant works closely with veterinary professionals to ensure the continuity of quality veterinary care. Responsibilities include: maintaining patient flow, communicating with veterinarians and techs, performing routine procedures, adhering to hospital standards, educating clients about wellness plans, and mentoring team members.

Preferred Education / Licenses
  • Certificate of completion from a NAVTA‑approved veterinary assistant program, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Preferred Experience
  • Ability to perform all required skills of a NAVTA‑approved veterinary assistant program at a level that enhances practice efficiency.
Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant

The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times, ensuring that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. Technical skills are applied daily within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.

Other Responsibilities
  • Help maintain the flow of patients.
  • Communicate with the veterinarian and veterinary techs.
  • Carry out or set up procedures that do not require veterinarian or vet tech assistance.
  • Adhere to hospital standards that keep pets safe, and keep treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs clean and organized.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans and the importance of preventive care.
  • Mentor other members of the hospital team.

Pay range: $15.19 – $19.41 per hour.
