Job summary

Alvin Community College in Alvin, TX is seeking a part-time Tutor IV to support students in the Learning Commons. The role involves tutoring in Math, Anatomy & Physiology, Writing/English, History, ESOL, Health Sciences, and other areas, with emphasis on increasing student success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher is required.
  • 6 credit hours in area of tutoring.
  • B+ or higher in course being tutored.
  • At least three years of tutoring, teaching, training, or instructional experience.
  • Mastery of the course(s) being tutored.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work with faculty and students.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills in multicultural environment.
  • Well organized, task-oriented and flexible.
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends at various locations.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor diverse student populations in various subject areas and answer questions with examples.
  • Provide analytic and diagnostic services to increase student success.
  • Ensure students' individual learning needs are met.
  • Refer students to campus support services as needed.
  • Evaluate and recommend tutoring materials.

SUMMARY

Hourly Rate $25.15

This is a part-time student Tutor IV position located in the Learning Commons Department. Applications are considered and reviewed based on departmental needs. Remote work opportunities will be evaluated according to student demand and on a case-by-case basis.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include working days, evenings and/or weekends. May require travel to our main campus in Alvin and/or to various offsite locations, including local high schools in Alvin, Danbury, Manvel and Pearland and to Texas Department of Criminal Justice facilities in Richmond, Rosharon or Lake Jackson. Fingerprinting is a requirement for the local ISD's per Texas Education Agency. Alvin College will reimburse the estimated cost of $50, if applicable.

Requires the provision of official transcripts and/or certifications within (30) days of hire.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Tutor diverse student populations in various subject areas. Answer academic questions, providing examples relating to the subject. Provide analytic and diagnostic services to increase student success. Ensure students individual learning needs are met. Refer students to necessary campus support services. Evaluate and recommend tutoring materials. Facilitate review sessions, workshops and trainings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent typically works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion, handle or feel, and to stand, walk, reach, bend or lift up to twenty (20) pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • At least 6 credit hours in area of tutoring assignment
  • B+ or higher in course to tutor
  • At least three (3) years of tutoring, teaching, training, or instructional experience
  • Mastery of course(s) being tutored
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Capable of working with both faculty and students
  • Ability to be empathic to students with difficulties
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Possess good interpersonal skills to perform successfully in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to be well organized, task-oriented and flexible
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends at various locations
